Labelling STRENGTH- Besmer et al (2013)
Having a parent convicted of a crime was a strong predictor of ASB as, presumably, the police would spend more attention watching that family.
1 of 7
Labelling STRENGTH- Livingstone et al (2011)
Found that those in the Criminal Justice System with a mental illness did have a label/stigma.
2 of 7
Labelling WEAKNESS of reductionism
Difficult to say that just labelling contributes towards Criminal behaviour, as it may also be biological factors that SFP and Labelling don't take into account.
3 of 7
SFP STRENGTH- Jahoda
Looked at Ghanian boys and it was shown that those who were labelled "aggressive and quick-tempered" were 22% likely to commit a crime compared to those called "quiet and peaceful", who were less likely
4 of 7
SFP STRENGTH- Rosenthal and Jacobsen (1968)
Students completed an IQ test at the beginning of the school year and those that were told they'd 'bloom' had better IQ scores than the others
5 of 7
SFP WEAKNESS- Zebrowitz et al (1998)
Said that baby-faced boys were more likely to be "nice and weak" but they went against the SFP and actually went out to commit more crimes.
6 of 7
SFP WEAKNESS- Gibbs (1974)
Investigated to see if treatment by the police would lead boys to commit an SFP cycle, but they didn't and no self-esteem was lowered.
