Voluntary euthanasia

The person is too ill or unable to ask for help to end their life but it is believed to be their wish or is in their best interests.

This refers to the practice used in Nazi Germany where a person is not asked or no consideration is given to what would be in their best interests

when the dying person is killed to put them out of pain. What is done ends their life - their illness does not kill them

keeping someone slive by artificial means using a machine e.g a respirator which breathes for someone, a dyalysis machine for feeding someone through a tube directly to the stomach

A home for the dying. People may go there to die or when they have a terminal illness for respite care to give their families a rest

a person has an illness that will kill them - doctors are unable to make them better

when the carer of a person who is terminally ill or seriously disabled is given a holiday/break from caring for their relative

bereavement/ bereaved
the word used to describe people who have recently had a relative who has died

extended family
where several generations of the same family live together in the same house of very nearby

care home
where elderly people can live in a community and they can be looked after usually because they have become too frail to live on their own at home

nursing home
where mainly elderly people can live and have their medical needs looked after by nurses. Costs more because the person needs more care

nuclear family
where parents and children live together in the same house
