What caused the earthquake and tsunami
The Pacific Plate subducted under the eurasian plate creating a shaking of the earth. It lasted for 5 minutes and lifted the sea bed up. It was a magnitude 9.0 This created a wave of 30 meters high that smashed into the NE coast of Japan.

Japan at boundary of 3 plates - Pacific/ Phillipine/ Eurasian. Active = over 1000 earthquakes a year. Large 7.2 earthquake the week before

Impacts on the people
Radiation increased the chances of cancer by 10%. 19,000 killed. 50, 000 homeless. Power shortages. Food shortages. Cost $300 billion.

East coast dropped by 1 meter. Land slide buried cars. Wave destroyed buildings, cars, boats. Mud and debris covered farmland. Fukishima poisoned the land and sea.
