what's an interview?
a meeting/discussion where the interviewer asks questions

-structured interviews- set lit of qs, cant expand
-semi-structured- list of qs but interviews can add/leave qs where appropriate
-unstructured interviews- no set questions, just a free-flowing convo where theres just themes

-group interviews/focus groups- group of interviewees who respond and interact with each other [+interviewees also raise qs, -may have peer-pressure]

which theorists prefer interviews?
+favoured by interpretivists as they like rich qualitative data
-positivists tend to not use these
+feminists prefer these as the method empowers individuals and women [-but there are concerns over power-dynamic]

name the reliability and validity evaluations:
+S.I are reliable as they can be repeated
-U.I harder to turn into quantitative data
+verstehen- full depth of individuals
-S.I then limited from how much data they give
+valid as there is a mix of close/open ended qs
-Hawthorne effect

-usually have smaller samples
-U.I pointless as they are specific vs target population
+S.I produces more representative data
+focus groups brings larger variety [-sample size is still small-

-time-consuming (face-to-face)
-costly to hire trained interviewer
-need to find way to record data, usually filmed but this is longer to transcribe

+interviewer able to offer support if interviewee emotionally struggling
+published findings will be anonymous [-interviewer still sees the interviewee]
-an interview can still be stressful

what issues can be studied for methods in context of education?
-pupil s.c
-pupils experience of health/sex ed
-class, ethnicity and language
-gender and male gaze
-class and parental choice of schools

-young ppl=less linguistic skills
+u.s interviews may be better for children as its like a convo [-but children may not be to the point so trained interviewer w kids is needed]
=+children have better verbal than lit skills

-location problematic as there is a power dynamic
-U.I very long so will effect schools or be done after school which effects teachers

-hierarchy system as if head gives approval, response rate is high

-adults 'know it better' so children may change the answer if they think their original a is wrong
