Structured interviews

Advantages

  • Interviewer has control
  • Questions are pre-determined
  • All interviewwws are asked the same questions in the same order
  • Face to face interviews allows the researcher to see participants body language
  • Reliable data
  • Answers are easy to record and analyse

Disadvantages

  • Interviewer effects can occur
  • Team of researchers may use different tones and body language
  • Time consuming
  • Costly
  • Opportunity to misinterpret questions - reducing validity
  • Does not allow respondents to expand on their answers

Evaluation

Positivists would prefer this type of interview over the others however interpretivists would not like this method of interviewing as it is not indepth enough and does not allow the participant to expand on their answers and talk about that they want.
