Define chemiosis.
The flow of protons down an electrochemical gradient through ATP synthetase, coupled with the synthesis of ATP from ADP and a phosphate ion
1 of 6
How is a proton gradient established?
Electrons are excited by energy. Energy moves through a series of carriers. Energy pumps protons across a membrane. Protons flow through ATP synthetase
2 of 6
What is an electron transport chain?
A series of protein carriers on the inner membrane of mitochondria and chloroplasts. It releases energy from electrons and incorporates it into ATP
3 of 6
How are protons and electrons passed through the elctron transport chain?
The electrons are ecited and increase their energy to an electron receptor. They then pass through protein carriers which release energy.
4 of 6
Define oxidation
When electrons are lost
5 of 6
Define phosphorylation
The addition of a phosphate group
