IMPACTS OF WATER INSECURITY

?
Pollution and waterborne diseases
- Where water is scarce, drinking water supplies can be polluted by sewage, industrial chemicals or nitrogen from fertilisers. - Some diseases (e.g. cholera, typhoid) are caused by microorganisms passed on through water containing untreated sewage.
1 of 5
Food production
- Irrigation for agriculture uses a lot of water. - A shortage of water means that less food can be grown, which could lead to starvation.
2 of 5
Industrial output
- Manufacturing industries are hugely water-intensive so they cant produce as much during water shortages, reducing people's wages and effecting the economy of the country.
3 of 5
Conflict
-Areas of water insecurity share the same water supplies, e.g.river/aquifer=water shortages can trigger conflicts.-E.g. one country tries to improve its water security by taking more water from river=reduce the water security of countries downstream.
