IGCSE Geography - Rivers Flashcards

?
Explain how the Drainage Basin operates as a system
It is a system based on the transfer of water. Water is entered, it travels through, it is stored, and then it exits.
1 of 11
Explain the difference between the Hydro-logical Cycle and Drainage Basin System
Hydro-logical Cycle is a closed system, water cannot be added or taken away. Drainage Basin is an open system, water can freely enter and exit.
2 of 11
List the Main components of a hydrograph
Peak Rainfall: The point of the greatest rainfall. Peak Discharge: The point of greatest discharge. Lag Time: The gap between the peak rainfall and the peak discharge. Rising limb: The increase of discharge. Falling Limb: The fall of discharge.
3 of 11
Explain the factors that affect the shape of a flood hydrograph
Discharge does not increase immediately because only a small amount of the rainfall actually falls into the channel. Lots of tributaries increase lag time. Small number of tributaries reduce lag time.

List and describe the 4 types of fluvial erosion
Attrition: Materials colliding with each other. Hydraulic action: The force of the water dislodges particles from river banks and beds. Corrasion: The rubbing of small materials and the river bank. Corrosion: The acid in the river dissolving rocks.
5 of 11
List and describe the 4 types of fluvial transportation
Traction: Rolling stones along sea bed. Saltation: Sand sized particles 'leap-frogging' Suspension: Carried withing water flow. Solution: Some minerals dissolve in the water.
6 of 11
Where does deposition occur and why?
Deposition occurs when a river lacks enough energy to carry its load, usually close to the mouth of a river.
7 of 11
List the three types of erosional landforms
Waterfalls, Rapids, V-Shaped valleys
8 of 11
List the four types of depositional landforms
Meandering Rivers/Oxbow lakes, Floodplains, Levees, Deltas
9 of 11
What the some positives of living on/close to a floodplain?
- Fertile Floodplain, Easy access to water, Fishing, Transport, Cleaning, Flat land for agriculture.
10 of 11
What the some negatives of living on/close to a floodplain?
- Possible and common flooding, damage to house and crops
