Central processing unit
The CPU stores instructions called a program. taking inputs from an input device, process the input in some way and output the results to an output device.

External backing stores - optical discs

Advantage - high capacity, e.g 1TB, more so they can be used to backup data or move large amounts of data between machines. Disadvantages - 1) They are often quite large and therefore inconvenient to carry around. 2) They break easily
