Describe what happened in the Saar region
After 15 years the league of Nations held a plebiscite to decide whether the region should return under German rule. It was a success for Hitler as 90% voted for returning to German rule.

Why was moving into the Rhineland Hitler's first big gamble?
This was a violation of the Treaty of Versailles. The French might attack. If he didnt gain this territory the public would have lost faith in Hitler as a leader.

It was a way to delay war. The economy was a bigger issue. Communism was a bigger issue. The USA wouldn't support a war with Germany at the time. The Treaty of Versailles was too harsh. Colonies wouldn't support a war.

Initially he claimed he wanted areas with Germans in. this then increased to the whole Sudetenland. this then increased to Hitler invading the rest of Czechoslovakia.

To give him time to prepare for war. He did not think the British and French would be strong enough allies against Hitler. He had designs on Poland.
