A red cross would be painted and a sign saying 'Lord have Mercy upon us' was nailed on the front door. Watchmen would watch the house to ensure no one would enter or leave.

People believe cats and dogs would spread the Plague. The mayor of London ordered the killing of an estimated 40,000 dogs and 200,000 cats.

People believed that the plague was spread by bad smells in the air. This was known as the miasma theory. Treatments based on this theory included burning wood so the smoke would mask the bad air, as well as carrying around flowers or herbs to ward off ba

People practiced flagellance, which meant they were punishing themselves so that God didn't have to. People also prayed and used candles to ward off evil spirits, much like the Black Death
