Instead of using a random method of selection we choose every Nth person

Stratified
A strata is a sub group. Participants selected from sub groups within the population. Sample needs to accurately represent the whole population

Validity
Refers to a tests ability to measure what it's supposed to meausre

Internal validity
Refers to whether the effects observed are due to the manipulation of the independent variable and not a different factor

External validity
Refers to the extent to which the results of a study can be generalised to other settings, other people and over time

Population validity
How representative of the general population the sample was

Ecological validity
Whether the findings of the study can be applied to real life situations

Historical validity
Old studies may suffer from low historical validity as culture and society changes

Reliable
How much can we trust the results to be correct. Unreliable studies have weak methodology and few controls

Mundane realism
How close to real life are the materials and procedures used in a certain study? Can the findings of an experiment be applied to real life tasks?

Generalisable
The extent to which the findings can be generalised to the rest of the population

Androcentric
Refers to a bias in psychological research where it focuses on the male perspective

Ethnocentric
Where the research focuses on one country, race or culture
