From 2000 to 2013, international migration incaresed by 33% to reach 232 million. As well as 862,000 people entered or left the UK in 2013.

Explain the differentiation in global migration
Different types: Permanent settlers, Temporary workers, Spouses and Sorted migrants. (2006) Cohen’s 3 migrant types: Full citizens, Helots (exploited, basically slaves), Denizens (privaleged foreign nationals).

Explain the feminisation of migration
As a result of; Expansion of occupations in western countries (40% UK nurses are female), Western women joined labour force, Western women less willing to do domestic work, Failure to provide adequate childrcare by the state.

What is meant by a Hybrid Identity?
Where two countries are joined into one

What is meant by a Transnational Identity?
When migrants are less likely to see themselves as belonging comletely to one culture or country, therefore they form this identity type.

First state policy appraoch to immigration. Aimed to encourage immigrants to adopt the language, customs and values of new place

Outline multiculturalism
Accepting that migrants may retain a seperate identity. Shallow and Deep diversity

What is an example of shallow diversity?
Regarding tikka masala as being a british dish- something that is acceptable by the state

What is an example of deep diversity?
Regarding arranged marriages as being okay- something not accepted by the state

Outline migrations link to a divided working class
Assimilationist make workers blame migrants for social problems, e.g unemployment resulting in racism . Castles & Kosack (‘73): migration benefits capitalism by creating a radically divided w/c, preventing united action in defence of their interests
