Clues

  • A period of sustained, moderately intense rain; it is associated withe passage of depressions. (8, 8)
  • Has become almost a perennial problem in recent years as longer-term trends have shown a downward movement in both rainfall totals and the predictability of the rainy season. (7, 7)
  • Often associated with intense thunderstorms, which occur widely in areas with ground heating such as the tropics and Continental interiors. (12, 8)
  • The movement of water in any form from the atmosphere to the ground. (13)
  • The movement of water that is unconfined by a channel across the surface of the ground. Also known as overland flow (7, 3, 3)
  • The planting of trees in an area that has not yet been forested in recent years (13)
  • The slow transfer of percolated water underground though previous or porous rocks. (11, 4)
  • The time when the river reaches its highest flow. (4, 9)
  • The upward movement of the water table into the evaporation zone (9, 8)
  • This is water that is retained by plant surfaces and later evaporated or absorbed by the vegetation and transpired. When the rain is light most of the water will be captured by this process. (Why you can stand under trees and not get wet.) (12, 4)
