Volcanoes
What comes out:
Ash clouds, volcanic bombs, pyroclastic flow, lava flow
Inside:
Magma chamber (very bottom), main vent (all the way to crater at top), side vents (branching off main vent, lava comes out the sides of the volcano from these vents)

Naples, is the only active volcano on
mainland Europe. It is best known because of
the eruption in A.D. 79 that destroyed the
cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum,
but Vesuvius has erupted more than 50 times.

Comparing Earthquakes
LICs (low income countries) often suffer more than HICs
(high income countries) because:
• People may not be well educated about what to do in
the event of an earthquake.
• Construction standards tend to be poor so homes and
other buildings may suffer ser

3 Ps
Prediction - Scientists try to work out when a volcano or earthquake is
going to happen so people can EVACUATE.
Preparation - Make sure people know what to do, where to go and
what to have ready if there is an EMERGENCY
Protection - Try to make buildings

You live where?!
People live near tectonic hazards for many reasons:
• Fertile soil and so the opportunity for agriculture (farming)
• Generate electricity from geothermal energy
• Tourism associated with volcanic activity
• Mineral extraction (mining)
• Great climate or
