Generalising from one particular object to a general class of objects eg. using the sign 'flower' for different types of flower and the sign 'key' for a variety of keys.

What does 'combinations' mean?
Once Washoe had about 8 signs, she combined them to make phrases eg. "go sweet" (being carried to the raspberry bush) and "listen dog" (at the sound of a barking dog).
