Engineering Unit 1 Skateboards 3.0 / 5 based on 1 rating ? OtherGCSEAll boards Created by: CharlotteCreated on: 05-04-13 16:55 51078321946 Across 1. This is the metal part of the truck that hangs down and moves, allowing steering of the skateboard. It is incorporated with the axle. (6) 4. The grippable surface on top of the deck. It has an abrasive surface to stop the rider from slipping off as easily. Polyester film is coated in epoxy resin, and then silicon carbide is sprayed on top and it is dried with a high powered heat lamp. (8) 6. These are rubbery rings, that are used in the truck, and put around the kingpin. There are 2 in most skateboards, 1 in the middle, that provides springiness for turning. The other is above the hanger, and allows it to be tightened or loosened easier (8) 7. This is a buffer between the truck and the deck, which stops the wheels touching the deck (and stopping the skateboard from moving), and they also act as shockpads, and absorb any shocks so the skateboard lasts longer. (5) 9. The long metal bar that is part of the truck. It is the moving part that coordinates the movements of both wheels. (4) Down 2. Can be made of metal or plastic. Used to hold a rotating part in place, but allows it to move. These are used in the wheels, so they don't wear down as quickly. (7) 3. A wheel. Made out of polyurethane or nylon. Polyurethane is poured into a mould, and then is turned down to the right size on a lathe. (5) 5. The large central bolt in the truck that allows the hanger to pivot, and is attached to the baseplate. (7) 8. The metal part that is attached to the deck with screws, and the rest of the truck hangs off/ (9) 10. The board part, made by compressing many layers of plywood (thin and easily bended) together after coating with epoxy resin. For smaller manufacturers, they may use vacuum pressing (4)
