Fossil fuels
Formed over geological time from decayed parts of plants and animals. They are non renewable resources as they can only be used once.
1 of 19
Non renewable resources
Can only be replaced over considerable periods of geological time
2 of 19
Renewable resources
Capable of natural regeneration on a human time scale. Provide almost continuous flows of energy
3 of 19
Primary energy
Energy harnessed directly from natural resources. Coal, sunlight and biomass are examples.
4 of 19
Secondary energy
Energy that has been converted into a more convenient form, i.e electrical energy
5 of 19
Energy security
Access to reliable and affordable sources of energy. Areas that have a surplus of energy (i.e Russia) are seen as being 'energy secure'. Those who rely on imports (i.e USA) experience energy insecurity.
6 of 19
Energy pathways
The flows of energy from the producer to the consumer through infrastructure such as pipe work or transportation methods such as oil tankers.
7 of 19
Transit state
A country or state through which energy flows through in order to reach the consumer.
8 of 19
Tar sands
Mixtures of sand or clay, water and bitumen (viscous form of petroleum)
9 of 19
Frontier hydrocarbons
Grades oil which are lower quality than the conventional crude oil. (i.e tar sands and oil shale)
10 of 19
Cartel
Association of producers or suppliers formed to monopolise the production and distribution of a product to control prices.
11 of 19
Peak oil/gas
Global production reaches its maximum level and then falls into a sustained decline. As production declines, costs increase.
12 of 19
Energy poverty
When a country has insufficient access to reliable sources of power
13 of 19
Security premium
The extra cost built into the price of oil to allow for any disruption in supply.
14 of 19
Energy gap
Difference between secured energy supply and projected energy needs.
15 of 19
Energy transition
Moving from traditional energy sources (wood) to modern sources (coal) as a result of development
16 of 19
Green taxation
Uses of taxes on certain greenhouse gas emitting services to encourage more environmentally friendly consumption.
17 of 19
OPEC
12 nations which are all net exporters and account for 2/3 of the world's oil reserves. Countries include Saudi Arabia, Russia and Nigeria.
18 of 19
Reserves
Remaining recoverable amount of a natural resource.
