Explain the advantages of taking Beta Blockers and name a type of sporting activity in which they would be used. (3)
Reduce the effects of adrenaline. Slows down the sympathetic nervous system. Slows down heart rate. Lowers blood pressure. Used in Archery, shooting, snooker.

Explain the physiological reasons why an athlete may choose to take synthetic Erythropoietin. (3)
Stimulates the release of red blood cell production. Increased haemoglobin levels. Increased oxygen carrying capacity. More oxygen to working muscles.

Aid assimilation storage of protein. Decrease in fat in muscles. Ability to train at high intensity for longer. Faster recovery time so can train more often. Increase in muscle mass.

Random testing. Structure strong clear strategic approach. Shared policies across organisations e.g. WADA & UK sports ethics department. Strong punishments. Lots of funding. Use of role models.

In power events winning margins are small so steroids provide extra muscle strength required. Long distance require amazing endurance and additional RBC's provide this capacity. High competition causes high anxiety and BB's can reduce this.

Others are doing it so need to keep up. Increased training drive/confidence. Massive rewards fro success e.g. fame and money. Institutionalised drug programmes

Suggest the reasons to support the legalising of drugs in sport today (5)
Create level playing field. Not everyone gets caught. Testing costs millions. Would get faster times/longer distances so more exciting. Individuals should have the right to choose. Making it legal would help with safer use.
