Nowadays used to describe describe any staging configuration in which the audience faces the stage straight-on. Back then was defined by the prominent arch which re-enforces the fourth-wall.
Proscenium Arch

A piece of equipment which increases the sound captured by a microphone or replayed from record, CD or tape. Captures the low voltage and turns it into a higher current signal.
Amplifier

When the lighting or sound levels either increases or diminishes.
Fade

A transparent, coloured sheet that goes in front of the lantern; used for colouring light or colour correction.
Gel

A type of lantern that gives a soft-edge beam with a wider size variation. Good for creating a wash.

A simple indoor performance space with plain black walls and a level floor. Simple structure means that their is flexibility in the configuration of the stage and audience placement.
Black Box

A type of staging where the audience is at two ends of the stage- facing towards each other. Somewhat like a runway.
Traverse Stage

A type of staging in which the audience is at three sides of the stage. Almost like a proscenium arch stage but now the audience fully surrounds the performance space.
Thrust Stage

A focused beam of light on one specific object/ character on stage. Produced by a Profile.
Spotlight

The features or characteristics of a given area that affect the projection of sound/ a study on the behaviour of sound.
Acoustics

A type of staging in which the audience stand and walk about the performance space rather than the conventional sitting down and watching the action idea.
Promenade

Smallest of all stage lights. Used to shine on the audience to create a small light that isn't big enough to draw attention away from the performance.
Birdie

A physical template slotted in front of the light source so as to control the shape or pattern of the light.
Gobo

A type of light fixture that is used for specific focusing on an object on stage- hence creating a spotlight.
Profile

Short for Public Address System.
PA System

Device consisting of a microphone head, transmitter pack and aerial and mains receiver unit which allows actors and singers to be amplified with no visible means of connection. Wireless.
Radio Mic

Type of lighting fixture used when a substantial amount of flat lighting is needed therefore they have high intensity bulbs.
PAR Can

A fill of light evenly across the stage through the use of lighting fixtures.
Wash

A speaker designed to play very low, almost inaudible frequencies. Used for background audio.
Subwoofer
