How did the New Deal help farmers?
Production was restricted, soil conservation encouraged, raised prices, loans provided to buy equipment and help indebted farmers save themselves from eviction.

They were all effective but benefitted large scale farmers the most. By 1930's farmers incomes were rising, but small farmers, farm labourers and share croppers saw little benefit.

What happened in 1934-35 which devestated farmers?
A drought hit and in many areas the soil was turned to dust. Farmers in areas such as Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas had little choice but to leave the land.

How did the New Deal help the poor?
Emergency relief prevented people from starving, as many jobs provided as possible and the Social Security Act 1935 set up a national insurance system.

What was missing from the New Deal?
It was criticised for not dealing with poverty or the poorest people. There was nothing in it to specifically help black people. Roosevelt was dependent on Southern support who were determined no help should be given to blacks.

How did this tarnish Roosevelt's reputation?
It gave ammunition to his critics that he was less interested in social justice than in preserving the USA's existing infrastructure.

How did the New Deal help workers?
Roosevelt wanted to create a relationship of trust between workers and employers. He tried to improve working conditions- NRA and Wagner Act regulated these.

Did employers like the New Deal?
many resented it and id all they could to deny workers these rights. Many companies hired thugs to beat up workers on strike.

What happened during 1937?
There were many violent strikes in the steel and automobile industries. Workers used 'sit-down' strikes, occupying their factory so machinery could not be kept running.

How did the New Deal aid the outcome of these?
Without New Deal laws the strikes would have gone in favour of employers but in 1937 around 80% were settled in favour of the workers.
