What is Cryptic Mate Choice?
Ability of females to favour one male over another after the initiation of copulation. This depends on various behavioural, morphological and physiological traits.
1 of 10
What are the types of Cryptic Mate Choice?
Directional and Non-directional
2 of 10
What is Directional Cryptic Mate Choice?
Criteria are consistent with criteria used in pre-copulatory mate choice.
3 of 10
What is Non-directional Cryptic Mate Choice?
Females have idiosyncratic preferences for the sperm of males with compatible genotypes.
4 of 10
What are the mechanisms of Cryptic Mate Choice?
Selective termination of copulation, Selective storage of sperm, Selective use of spermatophores, Selective sperm transport and Sperm ejection.
5 of 10
What is meant by Selective termination of copulation?
Females determine the length for which males are able to copulate with them by terminating copulations with unfavourable males sooner thereby restricting fertilisation success.
6 of 10
What is meant by selective storage of sperm?
Females bias fertilisation success by mating activity.
7 of 10
What is meant by selective use of spermatophores?
Females are able to eat the spermatophore before sperm is transferred, thereby denying the male’s investment.
8 of 10
What is meant by selective sperm transport?
Females may selectively decrease sperm transport for some males.
9 of 10
What is meant by sperm ejection?
Females eject the sperm of lower ranking males.
