What is the Formation of a covalent bond?
The sharing of a pair of electrons between two atoms
1 of 12
What makes the two atoms bond?
A strong attraction between the bonding pair of electrons and the nuclei of the atoms involved.
2 of 12
Simple Molecular structures have what boilings points?
Low
3 of 12
Why do simple molecular structures have this boling point?
The bond between the molecues has relativley weak forces: the intermolecular forces between simple molecules are weak.
4 of 12
Name the other property of Simple molecules and why?
Do not conduct electricity - this is because they do not have any free electrons or an overall electric charge.
5 of 12
Explain the high melting/boiling points of substances with giant covalent structures.
Lots of energy is needed to break many strong covalent bonds
6 of 12
When does a Covalent bond form?
When two non-metal atoms share a pair of electrons.
7 of 12
What sort of elements are involved in covalent bonding?
Non-metals
8 of 12
What are giant covalent structures arranged in?
giant regular lattices - extremely strong structures because of the many bonds involved.
9 of 12
Name two properties of Giant covalent structures
Very high melting points – this is because a lot of strong covalent bonds must be broken which requres a lot of energy Variable electrical conductivity - diamond does not conduct electricity, whereas graphite contains free electrons so it does.
10 of 12
What is one use of Graphite and why?
pencils, because each layer of graphite does not have a strng bond meaning that layers easily slide off.
11 of 12
What is one use of Diamond and why?
Drill bits, because the bonds between each atom in the lattice are very strng making diamond very strong
