Bonding

?
Name 3 types of bonding
Metallic, Ionic and Covalent
1 of 28
What is metallic bonding between?
metal+metal
2 of 28
What is ionic bonding between?
non-metal+metal
3 of 28
What is Covalent bonding between?
non-metal+non-metal
4 of 28
What are the 2 types of covalent bonding?
Covalent bonding in a giant structure or in a molecular structure.
5 of 28
What structure do molecular covalently bonded substances have?
Strong covalent bonds inside molecule.
6 of 28
Conductivity of molecular covalent?
Poor conductivity due to lack of charged particles.
7 of 28
High or low bpt of molecular covalent?
Low mpt/bpt due to weak intermolecular bonds.
8 of 28
Are molecular covalent soluble?
Mostly insoluble.
9 of 28
Give 3 examples of molecular covalently bonded substances.
Water, Iodine, Fluorine
10 of 28
What structure do giant covalently bonded substances have?
In a lattice structure
11 of 28
Conductivity of giant covalent?
Poor, due to the electrons not being able to move and form a flow of charge. Graphite is the only giant covalently bonded conductor.
12 of 28
Do giant covalently bonded substances have a high or low bpt/mpt?
High bpt/mpt due to all the atoms being linked by strong covalent bonds.
13 of 28
Are giant covalent soluble?
No
14 of 28
Give 3 example of giant covalently bonded substances
Diamond, Graphite, Sand
15 of 28
What structure is metallic bonding?
Giant lattice
16 of 28
High or low mpt/bpt in metallic bonding?
High mpt/bpt due to the strong electrostatic forces of attraction between the sea of electrons and the positive ions.
17 of 28
Conductivity of metallically bonded substances?
Good conductivity as the sea of electrons can move to form a flow of charge.
18 of 28
Solubility of metallically bonded substances?
Insoluble but some react.
19 of 28
Give 3 examples of metallically bonded substances
Iron, Copper, Silver
20 of 28
What structure is ionic bonding?
Giant lattice
21 of 28
High or low mpt/bpt in ionic bonding?
High mpt/bpt due to strong ionic bonds.
22 of 28
Conductivity of ionically bonded substances?
Poor in a solid, but when molten the charged particles can move to form a flow of charge.
23 of 28
Solubility of ionically bonded substances?
Soluble in water.
24 of 28
Give 3 examples of ionic bonding
Magnesium Oxide, Lithium Fluoride, Barium Phosphide
25 of 28
What is an ionic bond?
Metals giving electrons to a non-metal so both substances can have a full outer shell. The metals become positively charged and the non-metals become negatively charged.
26 of 28
What is a covalent bond?
A shared pair of electrons so both substances can have a full outer shell.
27 of 28
What is a metallic bond?
A strong electrostatic force of attraction between positive metal ions and a 'sea' of delocalised electrons.
