'be thy act Judas-Like [...] may'st thou be envied during his short breath'
TWD - 25 - even the most innocent women have impure thoughts/desires- corruption is everywhere
1 of 20
'we are engaged in mischief and must on [...] the way ascends not straight but imitates the subtle foldings of the winter's snake'
TWD -27- like satan's indirect approach to eve- even approach is sneaky and secretive - foreshadows sinfulness to come
2 of 20
'and this divorce shall be as truly kept as if the judge had doomed it'
TWD - 37 - good to demonstrate Isabella's dedication to Brachiano
3 of 20
'you see my lord what goodly fruit she seems, yet like those apples travellers report [...] she'll fall too soot and ashes'
TWD - 60 - fruit = direct reference to Eve in PL - ashes and soot connoted Hell
4 of 20
'this character scapes me'
TWD -62- Vittoria playing the innocent
5 of 20
'i could not pray'
TWD - 22- Vittoria - possessed by the devil? so corrupted/distanced from God that she can no longer communicate - Webster suggests she is pure evil
6 of 20
'oh your breath! out upon sweetmeats, and continued physic. the plague is in them.'
TWD -36- diseased against sin - throughout the play sin is often described as decay/disease - 'mildew' - she is infecting him with her innocence - condeming her to filthiness is worsened by women being valued for loveliness and beauty at the time
7 of 20
'accursed be the priest that sang the wedding mass, and even my issue'
TWD -37- cursing all the innocence and morality for corrupting his evil and preveting him from obtaining what he desires - blasphemy - values his own lust over his duty to carry on the family name
8 of 20
'to loose the were to lose myself'
PL - literally becuase she was made of his rib - also demonstrates his selflessness and heorism as he nobly sacrifices himself so she doesn't suffer alone. - unlike Brachiano
9 of 20
'some there are which call it my black book'
TWD - monticelso is the pope - however he is causing much of the coruption - rotten foundation - he is supposed to be pillar of morality and purity yet he is corrupting people - black = evil
10 of 20
'we see that undermining more prevails than doth the cannon'
TWD - Monticelso - trying to manipulate Francisco out of taking the noble war route and rather be sneaky and sly
11 of 20
'dost thou imagine thou canst slide in blood and not be tainted with a shameful fall?'
TWD - monticelso - 'fall' links to PL - blood = his previously 'scarlet robes' (more scandalous than red - also lust and sin) and thereofre past sinfulness - blood=death/danger - doesnt want to be tainted by fall/blood.
12 of 20
*continuation - christian idea that when physical body 'blood' dies the souls goes on and will not be permitted to be with god if tainted by sinfulness
yes
13 of 20
'malice bent on man's destruction, maugre what might hap of heavier on himself, fearless returned'
PL - latinate syntax reinforces heroism suggested here
14 of 20
'to have marred what he 'almighty' styled six nights and days'
PL - satan sees himself as equal to god - equally heroic or equally as evil/destructive?
15 of 20
one night freed from servitude inglorious [...] th'angleic name and thinner left the throng'
PL - he appears to be a saviour - slavery in heaven - alliteration of 'th' = impression of stuttering victory/snakishness
16 of 20
now constrained into a beast and mixed with bestial slime'
PL - satan doesn't want to be lowered in this way - feel he is above common animals - has to be sneaky as slime elves a trail
17 of 20
'loaded with fruit of fairest colours mixed ruddy and gold [...] dropping with milk at even unsucked of lamb
PL - gold = valuable and enriching whilst the idea that lambs also drink/eat from it suggests it is not corrupting as they are symbolic of innocence - it is perhaps even the reverse and morally cleansing
18 of 20
'but why to keep ye low and ignorant, his worshippers?'
PL -216- vilifying god and making him appear power-hungry and therefore they feel stupid/taken advantage of
19 of 20
'in plain then what forbids he but to know, forbids us good, forbids us to be wise?'
PL - 217- Eve - sounds increasingly similar to satan and also conveys the idea that what is forbidden becomes more interesting/irresistible/attractive
