Define conformity
Conformity is the influence a group has over
an individual and is often known as “Majority influence”. Each group has their own social
norms, unspoken rules on how people should act, when a person conforms they start to
follow the social norms of a larger

We conform
because there is something we value in the
group and we wish to be like them. We identify
with them so want to be part of it. This may
mean we publicly change our behaviour but not
our privately held belief.

Going along
with the group with-out a change in attitude
(only behaviour is changed). It happens
quickly and is usually short lived- basically it
lasts as long as the group pressure is exerted.

behaviour is accepted as a belief by
the individual and becomes part of
their own thinking. Here,
conformity occurs without any
particular conscious effort.
