Adware

Algorithm
A sequence of steps to solve a problem.

Alphanumeric string
A strong of alphabetic letters and numerals only, such as name, phone number or product code.

Analogue data
Real-world data that smoothly model even small changes, such as output from a temperature sensor.

Analogue-to-digital converter (ADC)
Devices that changes analogue data to digital data so that they an be processed by a computer system.

Anti-virus software
Software that identifies computer viruses and deals with them by now allowing them access to files or by erasing them.

Application software
Programs that allow people to use the computer to perform a specific task.

Array
Data structure that stores items of a single type that can be referred to by one or more indices or subscripts.

Artificial intelligence
The facility within some expert systems that enables them to modify their knowledge and rules bases so that they can learn from experience.

Assembler
Software which is used to translate the instructions written in an assembly language into the computer's machine code.

Assembly language
A low-level language which uses short words and abbreviations as mnemonics for machine code instructions.

Attribute
A specific type of data representing a particular characteristic of each data record. Also known as field or column.

Automated system
A system that carries out control tasks with limited interactivity.

Automated teller machine (ATM)
A 'cash-point' machine used to withdraw cash or manage a bank account.

The use of automated devices and methods for data input without human intercention.

Automatic stock control system
A computerised system that records sales and deliveries and automatically reorders fresh stock.
