Binary
used to represent all data on a computer and represent program instrucitons. Includes numbers, text, sound, images, etc.
1 of 38
Binary digits (bits)
the smallest unit of data that is represented in a computer, has a single binary value, either 1/0
2 of 38
Overflow
when there isn't enough room for a result - produces an overflow error
3 of 38
Integer
a whole number, can have positive/negative value
4 of 38
Byte
basic combination of bits used to represent an item of information, usually consists of 8 bits
5 of 38
MSB
most significant bit - leftmost and largest bit - is a minus number
6 of 38
Binary shift
operation done on all the bits of a binary value - are moved by a specific number of places to right/left
7 of 38
Arithmetic shift
used for signed binary numbers + allows you to multiply and divide negative two's complement numbers
8 of 38
Hexadecimal
a base-16 number system - are 16 digits and place values increase in powers of 16
9 of 38
Logical shift
used for unsigned binary numbers
10 of 38
Character set
the defined list of characters recognised by a computers hardware and structure
11 of 38
Encryption
process of encoding a message into a form that only the receiver can decode
12 of 38
Pixel
short for 'picture element' - is smallest single point of colour in a graphic image
13 of 38
Resolution
number of pixels per inch when image is displayed
14 of 38
Colour depth
number of bits used to encode the colour of each pixel
15 of 38
Sampling
taking measurements of sound wave at regular but distinct intervals of time
16 of 38
Sampling rate
number of samples taken per second, measured in Hertz
17 of 38
Bit depth
number of bits used to encode information from each sample
18 of 38
Fidelity
correspondence between original sound and recording
19 of 38
Compression
changing the format of a data file to make size smaller
20 of 38
Lossless compression
compressing a file without losing any data
21 of 38
Lossy compression
compression where some data is removed - original file cannot be restored after lossy file decompressed
22 of 38
Database
an organised store of data
23 of 38
Entity
something that is recognised as being capable of an independent existence - is uniquely identified and about which data is stored
24 of 38
Attribute
an item of data stored about an entity
25 of 38
Field
one piece of information
26 of 38
Record
all the data or information about 1 item
27 of 38
Primary Key
a unique identity for each record
28 of 38
Table
stores all information about 1 particulat category
29 of 38
Flat file database
database with a single table
30 of 38
Relational database
database that consists of one more than one table
31 of 38
File
all records in a table or a group of linked tables
32 of 38
Data redundency
the same data entered more than once
33 of 38
Data inconsistency
when same data entered more than once(redundancy) errors can occur
34 of 38
Compound key
a key that consists of two or more fields used to identify a record uniquely
35 of 38
Form
a user interface used to input data into a database
36 of 38
Query
used to search a database
37 of 38
Report
used to format and print out information from a database
