What was the Cold War?
A state tension and deep hostility between two superpowers, USA and USSR. A rivalry that started in 1945 and lasted for over 40 years.

Who were the Big Three at Yalta?
The Big Three at Yalta were Winston Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin. They met in February 1945. They met to discuss the final attack on Germany.

What was agreed at Yalta?
The Russian occupation of Eastern Europe was recognised, and accepted that it would be a Russian sphere of influence. Berlin to be divided into 4 zones. Poland to hold free and fair elections asap.

What went wrong at Yalta?
Raised the expectations of USA about free elections being held in Europe. Confusion over the meaning of Russian sphere of influence.

What was agreed at Potsdam July-August 1945?
Stamping out Nazism agreeded, and Nazi war crime trials to be held. Division of Germany into 4 zones was confirmed. Reparations from Germany agreed. USSR wanted a share in occupation of Japan, but denied by USA.

6 - Explain why there were tensions at Potsdam in July 1945.
The allied leaders had changed. USA was now represented by Truman, who was more of a hard liner. He did not trust Stalin and was very suspicious of him compared to Roosevelt. Especially in relation to Soviet intentions in Eastern Europe.

Churchill had been replaced by Alee. Churchill had been an important stabilising force, and without him there was huge rivalry between Stalin and Truman. There was disagreement over what to do with Germany in the long term.

The question was whether or when the four zones would be allowed to join together had since occupied the whole of Eastern Europe.

9- Explain why the USA was hostile to USSR in the years 1945-1949?
They were suspicious of Soviet intentions in Eastern Europe. Rather than allowing free elections as had been promised at the Yalta Conference, the USSR began to impose Communist rule on the countries it had occupied creating USSR controlled buffer

states such as Poland, Bulgaria and Runamia. Truman was less trusting than Roosevelt had been of Stalin, and viewed broken promises of Yalta with suspicion, especially as the Red Amy, the largest in the world, remained in control of Eastern Europe.

What was the Iron Curtain?
The border between Soviet controlled Eastern Europe and the West. The division between democracy and communism in Europe. A term introduced by Churchill in March 1946 It stretched from Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic.

17- What was 'Containment'?
The idea that USA would use power/wealth to stop or 'contain' the spread of Communism from Eastern Eurpope. The end of 'isolationism' with the USA now playing a leading role in world politics. Markd the deterioration in relations betwen USA and USSR.

First promoted as an idea by President Truman in March 1947 in his Truman Doctrine, supporting countries anywhere in world that might easily fall to Soviet control, due to economic hardship.

What was the Marshal Plan?
The plan was to provide aid to all countries in Europe to prevent the spread of Communism and to help them recover economically. About $17 million dollars was suggested by George Marshall. The plan was finalised in Paris in 1947.
