What is Eustatic change?
A GLOBAL rise in SEA LEVEL resulting in the actual rise or fall in the sea itself. E.g ice ages
1 of 9
What is isostatic change?
A LOCAL change in sea level resulting from the LAND rising or falling relative to the sea. E.g ice causing the land to sink or rise after a melting period
2 of 9
Name examples of coastlines of submergence
• Rias (drowned river valleys that have a dendritic system of drainage)
• Fjords (drowned glacial valleys that have a U-shaped valley and are 300 to 400 m deep)
• Dalmatian coasts
3 of 9
Talk about Fjords
• This is a drowned GLACIAL valley
• As sea levels rise, U-shaped valleys left by glaciers are submerged
• Fjords have steep river valleys and are fairly straight and narrow
• They can be 300-400 meters deep
• Found in Canada, Scotland, and most famous
4 of 9
Talk about Rias
• A former RIVER valley drowned by rising sea levels
• As sea levels rise, the river valleys are flooded. This means only the high land is visible
• Rias usually have a cross profile typical of a river valley and usually a dendritic system of drainage
5 of 9
Talk about Dalmation coasts
• These form in areas of the world where glacial valleys lie parallel to each other
• When the valleys are flooded, the tops of the valleys remain visible above the sea and appear to be a series of islands that run parallel to the coastline
• Example is D
6 of 9
Name an example of coastlines of emergence
• Raised beaches
7 of 9
Talk about raised beaches
• These are areas of former wave-cut platforms and their beaches that are higher than the present sea level
•Common around the coasts in western Scotland
• Relict caves, arches, stacks, and stumps as seen in the west of the Isle of Arran
8 of 9
Talk about marine platforms
• Marine platforms are where a gently sloping formerly submerged land has been exposed by uplift of the land or lowering sea levels
