Expectations created to provide certain roles and duties which can be verbally expressed. NOT LEGAL

Expectations and duties created and supported by the law. ► Eg. parents sending a child to school.

What are Human Rights?
Fundamental rights and freedoms that belong to every single one us.

What is the UN?
United Nations - international organisations founded in 1945, following WWII. Currently made up of 193 member states, formally 50.

What does the UN do?
Provides a forum for members to express views, find agreement and solve problems together. Takes action on issues confronting humanity.

What is the UDHR?
Universal Declaration of Human Rights, formed 1948. Following a traumatic WW2, the issue of the same rights not being universally respected was brought up.

How did the Human Rights come about?
50 member states came together under Eleanor Roosevelt to devise a list of all the rights that everybody across the world should enjoy.

What is the UNCRC?
Formed 1989: United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child. ► World leaders recognised that children needed their own rights. Agreed that under 18s often need special care and protection that adults do not.

How do we Balance Rights?
Some rights might conflict with each other. The right of speaking FREELY conflicts with rights of PRIVACY and SAFETY of family life. The UKHR restricts freedom of speech to resolve conflict in case of personal distress or encouraging hatred for group

What is Criminal Responsibility?
A criminal act is considered by society as wrong and damaging to other individuals/society as a whole. To be held guilty, the person must understand what they have done is wrong.

Who is usually not held responsible for Criminal Acts?
Young children and people unable to control their actions (ie Mental illness).

What is Rights of Responsibility?
Right to have somebody help you by speaking on your behalf; people arrested in the UK have the right to independent legal support.

What is the Magna Carta?
"The Great Charter" - created in 1215 and authorised by King John.

What is Clause 39 in the Magna Carta?
No man shall be stripped of his dignity, respect or possessions,or outlawed; and nor shall the king order for there to be forces taken against him. He can only be judged by his equals as followed by the law.

What is Clause 40 in the Magna Carta?
We will not sell, deny or delay justice or right to anyone.

No one shall take away these rights from us.

We have the duty to other people, and we should protect their rights and freedoms.
