What does the term barrier method mean?
Barrier method means a device that is used to prevent semen/sperm from coming in contact with an egg.

What are methods of contraception?

What is the combined pill?
It is a tablet containing both the hormones oestrogen and progesterone. This prevents ovulation, which reduces the likelihood of sperm meeting the egg and the egg becoming implanted in the womb lining. The women takes the pill for 21 days then has a

What is the progesterone-only pill?
This only contains progesterone hormone. This pill must be taken every day and needs to be done within a three hour period. It works by causing the mucus of the cervix thickening so that sperm cannot come into contact with an egg.

What is the intrauterine device (IUD)?
This is a small plastic T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus by a doctor or nurse. It release progesterone hormone into the womb which thickens the mucus preventing the sperm meeting an egg.

What is the contraceptive injection?
This is an injection which is given to women every 12 weeks. This also causes the mucus in the cervix to thicken to prevent sperm from meeting an egg. This also thins the lining of the uterus stopping a fertilised egg from being implanted.

What is the contraceptive patch?
This is worn on the skin and it introduces hormones to the body (o and P) It also works by causing the mucus in the cervix to thicken so a sperm cannot come into contact with an egg and also thins the lining of the uterus.

What is the contraceptive implant?
It is a small flexible tube into the skin of a women's upper arm. It release the progesterone hormone into the body to stop the ovaries from releasing an egg and thickens the mucus in the cervix.

What is natural family planning?
This is when a women records the symptoms in her body that indicates when she is fertile and able to conceive.

What symptoms does the women look for when natural family planning?
Taking her temperature, monitoring her bodily secretions eg apps to help her track the observations

What is the emergency contraceptive pill?
This is to prevent pregnancy after a woman has had unprotected sex or if she thinks the method of contraception used has failed. It must be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.
