Chemistry C3 2.3 Water treatment.

HideShow resource information
What are the properties that make water suitable for drinking?
Water for drinking should not contain any harmful substances and should contain only low levels of dissolved substances (salts) and microbes.
1 of 10
How is water made fit to drink?
Water is made fit to drink by filtering it to remove solids and adding chlorine to kill microbes.
2 of 10
How is pure water made?
Pure water can be made by distillation.
3 of 10
What is the problem with making pure water?
Distillation to make pure water requires large amounts of energy which makes it expensive.
4 of 10
How is water from an appropriate source treated to make it safe to drink?
Water is often treated by sedimentation and filtration to remove solids, followed by disinfection to kill microbes in the water (chlorine is often used to kill microbes in drinking water).
5 of 10
What can a water filter be used for?
To improve the taste of water.
6 of 10
How do water filters work?
The often contain carbon and an ion-exchange resin that remove some soluble substances and silver or another substance to prevent the growth of bacteria.
7 of 10
Why is distillation (to make pure water) not used to treat mains tap water?
It requires large amounts of energy to boil water and would therefore be very expensive to do on a large scale.
8 of 10
Should drinking water be pure?
It does not have to be pure but must not contain anything that is harmful.
9 of 10
What are the three main stages involved in producing water that is fit to drink?
1/ Suitable source. 2/ Removal of solids. 3/ Killing of microbes.
