Chemistry 1

?
Accuracy
A measurement result is considered accurate if it is judged to be close to the true value.
1 of 22
Precision
Precise measurements are ones in which there is very little spread about the mean value. Precision depends only on the extent of random errors - it gives no indication of how close results are to the true value.
2 of 22
Anomalies
Anomalies are values in a set of results which are judged not to be part of the variation caused by a random uncertainty.
3 of 22
Evidence
Data which has shown to be valid
4 of 22
Fair Test
A test in which only the independent variable has been allowed to affect the dependent variable.
5 of 22
Hypothesis
A proposal intended to explain certain facts or observations.
6 of 22
Prediction
A statement suggesting what will happen in the future, based on observation, experience or a hypothesis
7 of 22
Range
Maximum and minimum values of the independent or dependent values.
8 of 22
Repeatable
A measurement is repeatable if the original experimenter repeats the investigation using same method and equipment and obtains the same results.
9 of 22
Reproducable
A measurement is reproducible if the investigation is repeated by another person, or by using different equipment or techniques, and the same results are obtained.
10 of 22
Independent Variables
Values are changed or selected.
11 of 22
Dependent Variables
Value is measured for each and every change in the independent variable.
12 of 22
Control Variables
May affect the outcome of the investigation and therefore has to be kept constant or monitored.
13 of 22
Flammable
Flammable if exposed to ignition sources e.g. sparks, heat. Some substances may give off flammable gases in contact with water.
14 of 22
Harmful/Irritant
May cause irritation (redness, rash) or less serious toxicity.
15 of 22
Environmental Hazard
Toxic to aquatic organisms and may cause long lasting effects in the environment.
16 of 22
Carcinogen
May cause serious and prolonged health effects on short or long term exposure.
17 of 22
Gas Under Pressure
Contains gas under pressure. Gas released may be very cold. Gas container may explode if heated.
18 of 22
Corrosive
Corrosive material which may cause skin burns and permanent eye damage.
19 of 22
Explosive
May explode if exposed to fire, heat, shock.
20 of 22
Oxidising
Can burn even without air, or can intensify fire in combustible materials.
21 of 22
Toxic
Toxic material which may cause life threatening effects even in small amounts and with short exposure.
