What is a mole?
One mole contains the same number of particles are there are atoms in exactly 12g of carbon-12.
1 of 6
What is relative atomic mass?
The average mass of one atom of the element relative to one-twelfth the mass of one atom of carbon-12.
2 of 6
What are the first 3 processes in a mass spectrometer?
Vaporisation - The sample is placed in the mass spectrometer to be vaporised. Ionisation - The sample is bombarded with electrons to form +ve ions. Acceleration - An electric field accelerate the electrons to a high speed.
3 of 6
What are the last two process in a mass spectrometer
Deflection - The electrons are deflected by a magnetic field according to their mass/charge ratio. Detection - Ions with the correct mass/charge ratio pass through a slit and are detected by an instrument such as an electrometer.

What do the peaks in the spectrum represent?
They represent how many isotopes an atom has.
5 of 6
What is Empirical formula?
The simplest formula showing the simplest whole number ratio of the amount of elements present.
