The land that the settlement is built on. E.g London is built around the River Thames. The original settkement of Bristol grew on the River Avon and the River Frome.The settlement grew because of trading with the South Wales and Ireland

Where the settlement is compared to physical and human features around it E.g Flitwick is inbetween Luton and Bedford. Bristol is situated to the southwest of the Cotswold Hills and to the North of the Mendip Hills.

CBD-[Central business district] Middle of the city/town,which contains shops,businesses,restaurants ect. Inner city/town-The area near the center of the city. Inner Suburbs-An outlying district of a city/town. Sometimes merging with outer suburbs.

Outer suburb-A residential area on the outskirts of a town/city. Rural urban fringe-This is found at the edge of a town/city and is where town meets country.

Contains large department stores , high-rise office blocks. Middle of the CBD. Headqaurters of companies.
