Destructive plate margin off the coast of Indonesia triggered a 9.1 earthquake on the Richter scale

How did this lead to the tsunami?
The plate that is being subducted cracked and moved very quickly, causing the water to be displaced. It triggered a tsunami with waves up to 30m high.

14 - some of those affected were Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Maldives.

>230,000 people killed >Whole towns and villages destroyed. Around 1.7 million people homeless >Infrastructure severely damaged >Over 5 million people needed emergency water & medical supplies >Economic damage- fishing, tourism >Environmental damage

Salt from the seawater has meant plants can't grow in many areas. Mangroves, coral reefs, forests were also destroyed by the waves

>Hundreds of millions of pounds pledged by foreign governments, charities and businesses for emergency supplies >Foreign countries sent ships, planes, soldiers and specialists to rescue people, distribute food and help begin clearing up
