Repeated episodes in which the patient's mood & activity levels are significantly disturbed. Sometimes mania , sometimes depression

Abrupt elevated mood and activity level lasting between two weeks and 5 months

Unipolar and bipolar

Depressed mood for most of the day, diminished pleasure in most activities, weight loss, insomnia/hypersomnia, fatigue, reduced concentration

What are the symptoms of bipolar disorder?
Episodes of mania with unknown cause, episodes similar to unipolar depression, flips between mania and depression

How are bipolar and related disorders measured?
Beck Depression Inventory

What is the beck depression inventory?
A 21 item questionnaire covering a range of symptoms of depression. Each question has a 4 point scale to choose from. The higher the total amount of points the higher the depression levels.

It is valid and long standing, so should represent depression levels accurately

The self-report techniques used could distort answers
