      • Amongst most ages and cultures, women are 2x as likely to suffer from depression
      • Impacts 7-8% of the population a year
    • Major depressive disorder
      • DSM-5 says the diagnostic criteria includes...
        • Depressed mood or a loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities for >2 weeks
        • Impaired functioning with respect to social, occupational or educational areas of life
        • Specific symptoms, at least 5 of which must be present nearly every day for min. 2 weeks (e.g. change in sleep, excessive guily, suicidal thoughts, etc.)
      • A mental disorder characterised by symptoms such as depressed mood, tiredness and lack of interest and pleasure in various activities
    • Bipolar Disorder
      • A mental disorder involving a mixture of depressive and manic episodes
      • Involves 5 of the 9 symptoms of major depressive disorder and manic episodes (e.g. significant distress, increased talkativeness, increased activity, etc.)
      • Affects about 1/6 as many people as major depressive disorder, BUT, is harder to treat
    • Categories of symptoms/ characteristics
      • Cognitive
        • Thoughts of worthlessness/suicide
        • Poor concentration
      • Emotional
        • Irritability
        • Feelings of guilt
        • Relate to negative mood states/absence of positive mood states
      • Behavioural
        • Changes in eating behaviour
        • Reduction in normal activities due to fatigue
        • Less effective behaviour in the social, job and educational areas
      • All 3 categories can cause/ influence one another
