Define homeostasis
Controlling levels of certain substances in your body
1 of 10
What hormone gets released in the liver when blood glucose levels get too high?
Insulin
2 of 10
What happens in the pancreas when blood glucose levels get too low?
Pancreas releases glucagon hormone which breaks down glycogen in the liver into glucose which gets released into the bloodstream - elevating blood glucose levels
3 of 10
What does insulin do in the body?
Insulin changes glucose into glycogen in the liver if glucose levels are high
4 of 10
What happens to people's glucose levels with type 1 and type 2 diabetes?
Type 1 - pancreas fails to produce insulin therefore unable to regulate high blood glucose
Type 2 - When insulin-releasing cells not producing enough insulin or target organs not responding
5 of 10
How do you control type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes?
Type 1 - Injecting insulin
Type 2 - Eating healthy, exercising
6 of 10
Where in the brain does it detect temperature?
Hypothalamus
7 of 10
What happens when temperatures in the body drops lower than 37°C?
Body heating mechanisms switched on :
shivering
vasoconstriction - reduced blood flow to the skin by the narrowing of the blood vessels
8 of 10
What happens when temperature in the body exceeds 37°C?
Body cooling mechanisms switched on:
sweating - evaporates and cools off skin
vasodilation - increased blood flow to the skin by the widening of the small arteries
9 of 10
What is the formula to calculate BMI?
Mass(kg)/Height(m)^2
10 of 10
