What are biofuels made from?
Natural products, such as organic waste
1 of 10
What is the name given to the method ethanol production?
Fermentation
2 of 10
State briefly how ethanol is made.
Microorganisms respire anaerobically to produce lactic acid. This lactic acid is ethanol
3 of 10
Now lets go into more detail, there are three steps to making ethanol. State the first.
Starch turned to glucose by Carbohydrase enzyme.
4 of 10
Why is glucose needed?
For the bacteria to feed on for energy to respire
5 of 10
State step 2.
Juices fermented by yeast producing ethanol
6 of 10
State step 3.
Ethanol is then extracted by distillation. Ethanol has no been produced and is ready to use.
7 of 10
What is the main sort of cop used to produce ethanol?
Maize
8 of 10
When ethanol is used as a fuel it is Carbon neutral, state how.
When maize is grown it uses Carbon Dioxide in photosynthesis. When ethanol is burned it gives off the CO2.
9 of 10
How is ethanol better than fossil fuels?
It is renewable, Carbon neutral, cheap
