Can you explain issues starting the trade wars?
The dispute started in 1975
The agreement was the Lome Convention and was made with 71 ACP countries who were given tariff free imports quotas
The US transnationals which controlled the Latin American crop were supplying 75% of the EU market.

Can you explain solution of the trade wars?
A compromise was eventually reached in Geneva in 2009 between the EU and 11 Latin American countries. The EU agreed to gradually reduce tariffs on Latin American bananas.

to west Africa
- cheaper labour costs
- weaker legislation

What are the workers conditions?
long shifts in unbearable heat and many workers failed to earn enough to cover their basic needs

What are the benefits of fair trade?
- they get more money and a premium price for each box
- Fair trade sponsors children so that they can go to school
- gives workers certainty because they know what they are being paid
- Fair trade builds schools and health clinics

What are the weaknesses of fair trade?
- Not many companies use it
- Companies make less of a profit
- Certification costs increase
- Fair trade supports unsustainable markets and provides unrealistic prices.
