Bacterial Identification 2

?
why is it important to identify bacteria?
identify pathogens causing disease so treatment can be administed and to enable tracking and localisation of source
1 of 9
what are the results of a positive anaerobic test?
the streak plate should show up with colonies growing, if they can grow under anaerobic conditions then they are anaerbic and vice versa
2 of 9
what are the results of a positive urease test?
if urease is produced then ureas is broken down into ammonia, a positive result should show up purple/pink around the streak
3 of 9
what are the results of a positive strach test?
if the organism porduces enzymes which can break it down then there should be clear spots around the colonies when the plate is flooded with iodine
4 of 9
what are the results of a positive casein test?
if protease is produced then the areas around should be clear
5 of 9
what is postive test for lipid hydrolysis?
if lipases are produced then there should be a pearly sheen created by glyceridesa nd small white dots created by precipitation of lipids with calcium present in the agar medium
6 of 9
what is a postivie result for nitrate reduction?
when a bacteria can grow in absence of oxygen using NO3 as an electron acceptor then the result will show pink
7 of 9
how do you confirm a negative nitrate reduction test?
If it really is a negative then when zinc powder is added then the nitrate should reduce and turn pink, if it doesnt turn pink that means the reduction by the organism was that succesful the nitrate was turned to ammonia gas an escaped
8 of 9
what is a positive result for carbohydrate fermentation?
If the organism can succesfully break downt the sugar, acid is produced and the pH indicator should be yellow to show acidity
