AS Physics Unit 1: Material Definitions

Definitions of materials for P1 exam

?
Ductile
Displays a great deal of plasicity under tension before it breaks
1 of 9
Malleable
Displays a great deal of plasicity under compression before it breaks
2 of 9
Elastic
Deformation by forces is corrected and material returns to normal shape
3 of 9
Plastic
Deformation by forces is retained by material
4 of 9
Strength
Ability to withstand tensile, compressive and shearing forces without breaking
5 of 9
Stiffness
Size of deforming force to the size of deformation is small (deforms little)
6 of 9
Brittleness
Withstand small deformation then brakes
7 of 9
Toughness
Absorbs significant amount of energy before plastically deforming
8 of 9
Hardness
Resistant to scratching and indentation on surface
9 of 9
