Small farming units in some areas, other areas maintain a hunter-gather lifestyle. Dependent on enviromental factors. Some display complex development of ritual.

Last area of the world to be colonised. Population linked back through language and genetics to early people of eastern New Guinea.

Violence became endemic. Hugh amounts of spears made. Deforestation on a large scale causing soil erosion. Warfare ensued and statues toppled. Appearence of the birdman cult.

What were the key characteristics of New Zealand?
Agriculture impossible in South Island due to climate. Settlement concentrated on North Island. Status items showed the rank and social standing of the owner.

What were the sites like in New Zealand?
Fortified sites known as pa. Some built on hillsides, others located on promontaories. Late 18th century accounts record house, storehouses around central open spaces and culvitation plot.
