What is liturgical worship ?
worship that follow a set pattern

worship that does not need to follow a set pattern

a type of informal worship that is free-flowing and lacks structure. people may sing and dance and speak in tongues

what is private worship ?
this is just as important as public but instead takes place at home/somewhere private. Christians may use a string of rosary beads.

Baptism (sacrament)
Water and the sign of the cross. welcomes child/person into the religion

Infant Baptism
usually performed on a baby. pours holy water (blessed) from the font onto the forehead. sign of cross made on forehead. promises made by parents/god parents on behalf of child to live a christian life

Believer's Baptism
is for older children/adults. takes place in a baptistery. walk down steps (symbolizes old life) then are 3 full submersions and then they walk up more steps to leave (symbolizes new life)

Confirmation (sacrament)
Renew promises made at baptism. The laying on the hands by the bishop

Eucharist (sacrament)
Bread and wine. spiritual feeding with the body and blood of christ. eucharist represents Jesus' sacrifice. unites them with God

Eucharist in Roman Catholic mass
sins are confessed, are bible readings, sermon and prayers. bread + wine brought to alter and Eucharist prayer is said

The Lord's supper- other protestant groups
tend to be much simpler services, people gather at front of the church. last supper story is read out and the bread and wine are shared, usually the wine is non-alcoholic and is given in little cups. Protestants believe bread+ wine are symbolic

Healing (sacrament)
anointing and the laying of the hands. usually in preparation for death

Reconciliation (sacrament)
words of forgiveness/ confession. forgiveness of sins

Marriage (sacrament)
rings to symbolize the endless love between the couple

Ordination (sacrament)
the laying on the hands by the bishop. special gifts of the holy spirit are needed by a deacon or a priest

Pilgrimage
a pilgrimage for many believers is a way to connect with God. allows focus on faith and a renewed energy to cope with the demands of life. Some people however believe the money spent on pilgrimages would be better spent donating it to the poor

Iona pilgrimage (in scotland)
place where one of the first monasteries founded in scotland. christian monk who built this monastery was tasked to spread the christian message. a stay in iona means work as well as worship

Lourdes pilgrimage (in france)
here st.bernadette claimed she has seen a woman, the virgin mary in 18 visions. the water is said to be holy- people go to be healed

Evangelism
evangelism means spreading God through preaching the gospel of christ

Persecution
persecution is hostility and ill-treatment usually because of prejudice.

Reconciliation
reconciliation means bringing people together to be friendly again

Poverty
LEDCS are the poorest countries in the world. relgious agencies help people in LEDCS because of the extreme povery in which so many people live in

Emergency aid
an immediate response, generally to a disaster. providing food,water and medical kits etc

Short term aid
this then takes over emergency aid and this involves starting to put things into place

Long term aid (development)
is about tackling the root of the cause and enabling communities to become self-sufficient
