Pregnant women at high risk of their baby having a genetic condition (womwn over 40)

How is amniocentesis performed?
- 15th - 20th week of pregnancy - long needle through abdominal wall into amniotic sac guided by ultrasound - sample of amniotic fluid is taken - lab for analysis

Why is amniocentesis done?
Can detect conditions such as Down's syndrome and CF

If results are negative?
can be fully prepared for arrival of baby or consider a termination

Disadvantages?
- Can be painful/uncomfortable - risk of miscarriage
