what is retribution
based on the idea that the offender deserves punishment. it contains an element of revenge and does not seek to alter future behaviour merely provides a proportionate punishment for the crime

the aim of rehabilitation is to reform offenders and reintroduce them into society. it is forwards looking with a hope that offenders behaviour will be altered

aims to ensure that the offender does not reoffend

the aim of general deterrence is to prevent potential offenders from committing a crime

what is public protection (incapacitation)
the idea that punishment must serve a use for society. provides inability to commit crimes and therefor protects society and the offenders themselves

often involves compensating the victim. repairing the damage done to the victim and society
