A2 OCR Salters B Chemistry 12.3 Arenes

Flash cards for the section 12.3 of the OCR Salters textbook. You might find it helpful to make your own flashcards for the structures of some arenes and other compounds derived from arenes :) (But if I figure out how to put images on the flashcards on here, I'lll do it too!)

What state is benzene at room temperature?
(Colourless or light yellow) liquid
1 of 18
What is the molecular formula of benzene?
C6H6
2 of 18
Is benzene saturated or unsaturated?
Very unsaturated
3 of 18
What is the structure and shape of benzene?
It has a cyclic structure and forms a flat hexagon
4 of 18
What are the bond angles of a benzene ring?
120 degrees
5 of 18
What is interesting about the lengths of bonds in benzene?
They are all the same length
6 of 18
How are electrons delocalised in a benzene ring?
The 6 carbon atoms present each have 4 outer electrons, three of these form bonds, leaving one electron on each. These remaining electrons are spread out and shared evenly by all 6 carbon atoms
7 of 18
Additional evidence for the delocalised electron structure of benzene comes from...
Electron density maps (drawn up from X-ray diffraction studies)
8 of 18
Why is benzene often represented by a hexagon with a circle inside?
The hexagon refers to the 6 carbons present. The circle refers to the fact the delocalised electrons in benzene are constantly moving as they are shared by all 6 carbon atoms
9 of 18
How does the cyclic delocalisation of benzene make the molecule more stable?
The delocalised electrons repel one another to positions where they are as far away as possible. This means minimal repulsion and high stability
10 of 18
What kind of reactions does benzene tend to undergo?
Electrophilic addition (or reactions which will not disrupt the stable ring structure)
11 of 18
What are arenes?
Hydrocarbons which contain rings stabilised by electron delocalisation. An aromatic hydrocarbon
12 of 18
What is the other name for methylbenzene?
Toluene
13 of 18
What is the other name for phenylethene?
Polystyrene
14 of 18
What is a phenyl group?
A benzene ring in which one hydrogen atom has been substituted by another group
15 of 18
'Joining' benzene rings gives...
Fused ring systems
16 of 18
What is a phenol?
A benzene ring with an OH group attached
17 of 18
Benzene + hydrogen ---> ?
Cyclohexane (this is hydrogenation with delta H -208 kJ per mole)
