Geography Key terms and Case Studies on World Cities

Mumbai (Bombay) Case Study Planning and management issues

·        Bombay was initially a group of seven islands on the Konkan coastline and became a trading port for the East India Company in the 17th century and was named Mumbai in 1996.

·        The city faces the Suez Canal route which the main western gateway is allowing for transport and trade.

·        India’s biggest city with a population of 14,350,000 and is a financial centre, major port, industrial area and a centre of culture.

PLANNING AND URBAN MANAGEMENT ISSUES TODAY

·        Dharavi is Asia’s largest slum where as many as 18,000 people crowd into a single acre.

·        Navi Mumbai/New Mumbai is a planned satellite township of Mumbai on the west coast of the Indian state Maharastra which was developed in 1972 as a twin city of Mumbai and is the largest planned city on the planet. It is there to provide space for new suburbs and industrial parks and ease congestion.

SOLVING MUMBAI’S PROBLEMS

·        The state government plans to redevelop Dharavi and transform it into a modern township with housing, shopping complexes, hospitals and schools and is estimated to cost £1.1 billion.

·        They will be knocking down the slums and placing high rise buildings ( 7 storeys high ) and less than two metres apart with long, dark corridors.

According to Kevin Mcloud, they are more or less, vertical slums.

·        The majority of people do not want redevelopment because these communities have evolved organically over time into strong neighbourhoods. Only people who have proof that they have been living there since 1995 will be granted flats.

Bombay’s Railways

·        A major factor aiding the economy and reducing congestion from transport, also a community where families known as the railway colonies live and make a living working for these railways.

·        Mumbai Suburban Railway is a mass transit system serving the metropolitan region and carries more than 7.24 million commuters daily, which is the highest passenger density of any urban railway in the world.

WATER SYSTEMS IN MUMBAI

·        As of July 4, 2012 the Brihanmumbal Municipal Corporation (BMC) are mapping out the entire water supply system in the city and identifying faulty lines.  An official has said that the entire process should take between 3 to 4 years.

CONCLUSION

·        There will be a big loss of community, 10,000 people in the Pottery area alone will be displaced when homes are demolished.
